Frequently asked deck & Porch Railing Questions
Contract Exteriors is a James Hardie Guild Quality Customer Service Award winner and certified by the Vinyl Siding Institute. We pride ourselves on providing top-notch customer service for all our clients. Here are some answers to frequently asked questions about the services we provide.
How much does a new deck cost?
The cost of your new deck or porch will depend on the size, materials used, and the cost of materials. However, we offer competitive rates and affordable financing on all of our services. Contact us today for a FREE estimate.
How big should my deck be?
While a deck makes your house look homely, you don’t want to overwhelm it visually. Conversely, making your deck too small might result in it being lost.
The average deck size is between 300 and 400 square feet. Most contractors agree that your deck should be no larger than 20 percent of the house’s square footage. Furthermore, a deck should be wider than it is deep, with the longer dimension running along the house.
What’s the average lifespan of a deck?
In general, wood decking will last roughly 15 years. Yet, with great maintenance, wood decking can easily last 20+ years. Still, there are many factors that affect how long your wood deck will last, including mold, rot, discoloration, and splintering. Read more about the lifespan of wood decks and factors that affect their durability here.
Composite decking is slightly longer-lasting, reaching at least 25 years. It’s also possible that your composite deck can last between 30 and 50 years. This is because its production process molds real wood and synthetic fibers into boards and caps them with a vinyl shield.
How do I know if my deck needs to be replaced?
Common signs that your deck needs to be replaced include:
- Cracked, splintered, or loose boards
- Rusty nails and metal connectors
- Deck posts with water damage or rot
- Joists that show signs of decay
- An older deck that hasn’t been maintained
